When it comes to the feature list, both themes are pretty much the same. They both come bundled with essential LSVR plugins for events, directory listings, documents, galleries, people directories, and notices. The backend of both themes is almost indistinguishable from each other. The same goes for the code quality. Even though TownPress was released two years before Pressville (so you might think it’s a bit dated), the TownPress 2.0 update was released in January 2018. This major update was basically a complete redesign of the theme from the ground up. The biggest difference between the two, and the one you should probably make your decision based on, is the design.
Pressville is a great choice if you have a lot of high-quality photos of your town or some nice stock photos in general. It ’s ideal for larger towns that want their site to focus more on showcasing the town to potential tourists or visitors. There’s plenty of space between all the elements on the page, so everything stands out on its own and nothing is cluttered, which creates a more modern look.
On the other hand, TownPress is a great theme for municipal sites that are primarily focused on providing as much information as possible to their residents. You can use two sidebars at once, and there’s a higher text density, so you can display a lot of information without making your pages take too long to scroll. This is a more traditional approach to a municipal theme, especially for smaller municipalities that don’t need a lot of high-quality, web-friendly photos.
The good thing to keep in mind is that the transition between both themes is quite easy. All of your main content, such as news posts, events, documents, notices, directory listings, and galleries that you created in one theme will also be available in the other (in case you decide to switch from one to the other in the future).
